Marc Coppey is recognised as one of the world's leading cellists. A protégé of Yehudi Menuhin and Mstislav Rostropovich, he first came to international attention at 18 when he won both First Prize and the Special Prize for Best Bach Performance at the prestigious Leipzig Bach Competition — immediately earning the admiration of Menuhin himself.
His career has since taken him to the world's foremost concert halls, performing regularly as soloist with leading orchestras under conductors including Alan Gilbert, Emmanuel Krivine, Lawrence Foster, Kirill Karabits, and John Nelson. A passionate advocate of the cello's full range, Coppey is equally at home in the Baroque, Romantic and Contemporary repertoire, and has given world premieres of works by Lenot, Monnet and Tanguy, with compositions dedicated to him by Lera Auerbach, Ivan Fedele, Betsy Jolas, and many others.
As a chamber musician, he has performed alongside Maria-João Pires, Stephen Kovacevich, Vadim Gluzman, Viktoria Mullova, and Emmanuel Pahud, among others, and was a member of the acclaimed Ysaÿe Quartet (1995–2000).
He is a Professor at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris, Artistic Director of the Saline Royale Academy (Arc-et-Senans), and Artistic Director of the Colmar Easter Festival. He was named Commandeur des Arts et des Lettres by the French Cultural Ministry.
His discography on the Audite label has received extraordinary critical acclaim — including Diapason d'Or, Télérama ffff, and BBC Music Magazine ★★★★★. Marc Coppey performs on a Matteo Goffriller cello (Venice, 1711), known as the 'Van Wilgenburg'.
